“His works seek to create psychologically charged images of a reality that lies somewhere between memory and dream”
Introduction
David Storey is a contemporary British artist known for his evocative figurative paintings set within an imagined world of melancholy, stillness, and quiet transcendence. Storey’s paintings are constructed through the use of found images and visual fragments. Central to his practice is the conviction that the past is not fixed but transparent and profoundly mysterious. His works seek to create psychologically charged images of a reality that lies somewhere between memory and dream—scenes that quietly linger, haunting the viewer’s imagination while maintaining a sense of calm, restraint, and stillness.
Born in the mining town of Workington, in the county of Cumberland, he grew up surrounded by the dramatic landscapes of the English Lake District—an environment that continues to inform the mood and atmosphere of his work. He studied at Hornsey College of Art and later at Middlesex University in London. He's now based in Hove, East Sussex, where he continues to explore the meeting point of imagination and memory.
